A/V Geeks

Internet Archive

The A/V Geeks Film Archive is an ephemeral film collection curated by Skip Elsheimer. What started as a hobby more than ten years is now a lifetime commitment. His collection has grown to over 25,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. He presents themed film shows in his home base of Raleigh, North Carolina and he's taken his shows on the road across the United States. Films from Skip's archive have been released on DVDs. For more information about A/V Geeks upcoming shows, the DVDs, stock footage inquiries and donating to the collection, visit http://www.avgeeks.com. Skip is happy to be able share these selected films from his collection online - giving them a life beyond their intended purpose as little cultural time capsules of our immediate past. Enjoy!

What is an "A/V Geek?" Short for "audiovisual geek." The semi-derogatory term used to describe the kid who was allowed to operate the film projector in school. Such were considered to be "teacher's pets," but were often allowed to avoid classwork and freely roam the school halls eventually ending up at the library to get the projector and films.

To license these films and get a higher quality versions for broadcast/film purposes, contact A/V Geeks LLC for reasonable rates.

Help us get more films like this online! This film was digitized and uploaded thanks to contributions from this project: www.indiegogo.com/avgeeks100miles Points out that the bicycle rider is responsible for maintaining the bicycle in good condition, obeying traffic rules and watching out for others. The film also reads like a laundry list of hazardous things to attempt on your bicycle! Those familiar with Lawrence, Kansas (Centron's home) may recognize some landmarks.

This quirky film educates young drivers to try to share the road with bicyclists. We follow the growth of Lisa from a pig-tailed bicyclist to a teen driver who now must tolerate unpredictable bike-riders. GM likes bikes too! It's narrated by Jim Stringer - who did much of the music for Centron Films in the late 1970s and 1980s. Part of a film series on typical types of automobile crashes and their causes, this films starts with a goofy sequence with Bonnie and Clyde-type characters. Like many films made to address social woes (drugs, teen pregnancy, shoplifting) drivers education films were often cautionary tales where people were punished for their mistakes. The challenge of these films was to get their audiences to identify with the characters and situations on the screen. Especially hard were teenage audiences who...
